On Tuesday, Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive, received the 2024 ProjectUil on behalf of the Dutch Wikipedia community. The award ceremony took place during his visit to the Netherlands, where he gave a lecture in Leiden about the Internet Archive and copyright. In his speech, he emphasized the close collaboration between Wikipedia and the Internet Archive and the role of reliable sources in the information ecosystem.

Five years ago, the COVID pandemic began—an event that, for many, is now a thing of the past. But behind the statistics are people and stories that should not be forgotten. That’s why I set out to create a lasting memorial by adding the data of 1,000 American COVID victims to Wikidata. This project demonstrates how data can help document lives and reveal connections—from birthplaces to occupations, from family relationships to final resting places.
